My gaff, my rules...

Loved the picture of Aedhmar Hynes, CEO of Text 100, used in her PR Week profile the other week. I think it's Text 100's reception desk, but all you'd need are a few pumps, some optics and Al Murray and Aedhmar could be in her local boozer. No wonder she's smiling! Mind you, having said that, we're not even sure Aedhmar drinks...but we haven't met many from the Emerald Isle that don't.

And then I read that Text 100 is the first PR company to set up a permanent office in the virtual world of Second Life, and that there's even going to be an avatar of Hynes in there! I don't know much about Second Life, but this is what CBS said about it:

"When reality gets hard to take, there's an escape to a parallel universe — a virtual world without end where real people create online personas called avatars. Anything is possible."

Like double digit revenue growth and zero client turnover perhaps?

This from the second life website:

"Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by 370,997 people from around the globe."

I'm reminded of Johnny Vegas' appearance on 'Room 101', where he talks about internet chat rooms....one of the funniest bits of TV I have ever watched...

I assume clients can pay with virtual money?

So the real world impinges on a virtual world. Wonder when Second Life will have an in-game game, called Third Life, that offers escapism from a virtual existence that exactly mirrors the real world down to the pathetic stunts PR companies pull to appear cutting edge.

God, I'm confused and depressed about this announcement - not even the thought of a fruit based drink cheers me up.

virtual money in those games can equal real cash though. if you look at world of warcraft - there was an island auctioned on ebay for 20K or some such amount recently. so earning virtual money and buying virtual stuff can equal real world bucks

Truly shameless self-promotimg stunt. If Aedhmar recommends that all corporate leaders who blog should run or own blog, then surely she must commit herself to manning her own avatar, no? As an SL member and a 15 year PR pro, it just feels tacky...

Figgis,

I believe the current rate is 208 Lindens to the US$.

And there is indeed much money being made IRL from IVL activity. As well as making objects that can be sold on eBay some people also outsource their playing by signing up for a game like WoW and Ultima and then pay someone else to get their character to a decent level.

Which seems to defeat the object of signing up in the first place.
