Valcon Towers is a-changin'...

It seems that, as the legal ruminations and cogitations continue over the future of VNU, it's starting to become clear that all looking pretty bleak for some of our best known tech journos.

The rumours have begun that up to 25% of staff currently working across VNU's range of titles may find themselves out of work come the end of the summer. How true this is remains to be seen and it's, as yet, unclear which titles will suffer the most. Some would argue that many can little afford to lose any more decent staffers as it feels like the company has only just recovered from the last rash - many will remember the departure of Steve Ranger, Colin Barker et al.

On the flipside, however, there is a sniff of a suggestion of a revival of the ill-fated VNU Newdesk......it didn't work first time around.....the rumour is that those in the know want to cherrypick some of the best from around the business to make a go of it. Watch this space.

Here's a Cognos press release from Lewis PR:

Here's a news story in IT Week:

Can you spot the difference - other than, the order of the paragraphs?

Perhaps this is behind the 25pc cut in editorial staff - who needs journalists when you can simply run the press release word for word?

So, it's the return of the typing pool? Presumably because it worked so well the last two times vnu tried this approach and, er, canned it.

If this is true, a cynical mind might say this is just a quick way to lay off journalists: "Yeah, we don't need a network editor/production editor/publisher because we're centralising and will only have one network editor. Sorry about that."

Computing's somewhat baffling decision not to replace that nice Mr Green is becoming a little clearer now...

"Computing's somewhat baffling decision not to replace that nice Mr Green " !!

Are we talking about the same Mr Green here? Baffling? Entirely understandable to anybody who reads Computing.

Does Chris Green edit this blog or something?

Ummm, no, he doesn't. But as you'll notice, the comment about that 'nice Mr Green' was posted by another anonymous...which means it was probably him!

Talking of Mr Green - did anyone else watch the IT Pro launch webcast this afternoon? You'd have thought that after sitting through countless boring presentations by our clients, they might have learned how to avoid such pitfalls. It was like watching paint dry....

from one 'anonymous' to another...

my comments about Computing not replacing yon Green were entirely 'tongue-in-cheek', or 'ironic' or something...

Unfortunately, that kind of stuff does not come across well in text-only. Sorry to confuse you.

I missed it unfortunately but I did enjoy the numerous reminders about it. Am I being in cynical in thinking that hacks would be less than happy to recieve a daily, or seemingingly so, prompt to attend something they had already signed up for?

Kasteera, maybe its a new way of working for IT Pro - perhaps they are challenging us to do the same to their editorial staff, who might be a tiny bit forgetful?

surely TWL should be offering a prize to the first PR to do this over a 3 week period and still get IT Pro to come to the event...

But i thought Mr Green was part of the "IT dream team"??

confused....

Dear all,

25%? Very, very unlikely.

Cuts on that scale are usually the territory of corporates with terminal financial difficulties or merged entities with big staff overlaps (eg: NTL).

VNU's media operations don't qualify under either heading.
