You say goodbye, and I say hello…Moto...

As we pointed out a while back, three-quarters of a million pounds of PR retainer is the sort of money that changes a business…and it’s about to have a fairly dramatic effect on two of London’s PR agencies.

Motorola has made its decision and, if you’re a company named after a glowing insect and a resident of Fulham which has looked after the account for a number of years, it ain’t good news. It ain’t good at all. You’re crying into your beer.

On the other hand, if your name’s Edelman (along with your sister Jackie Cooper) you’ll be popping the Champagne corks.

And sadly, as a number of good PR execs inevitably have to leave the Coda Centre and the chaps down Haymarket way start hiring like mad, the real winners appear to be the recruitment consultants...unless Mark Mellor and Stuart Smith get together and have a smart conversation.

Nobody should have be leaving - that's the wonder of TUPE.

Okay Steve - time to nail your Edelman colours to the mast...

If you're saying what we think you're saying, you're way off, I'm afraid.

Interesting question regarding TUPE regulations though...has this ever been applied when a PR contract moves agency? I've never heard of it...and reading up on TUPE this description of where TUPE does NOT apply might suggest it doesn't:

"Transfers of a contract to provide goods or services where this does not involve the transfer of a business or part of a business"

Be an interesting case to argue though, wouldn't it?

So is Mr/Miss TWL not from Edelman then - is that a denial Mr/Miss TWL?

Sure is.

But then speculation about who TWL might or might not be is a bit irrelevant. If we're outed then fine...we'll have to stop! Which would be a shame for us and for those people that enjoy reading it.

And, being honest, most of the stories here are emailed in to us anonymously...all we do is a bit of wordsmithing and stick them up.

Mind you, speculation such as that enjoyed by our buddy Amanda Chapel wouldn't hurt the hit count...

I doubt there will have to be many redundancies, a lot of the key players on the Motorola account have already moved on (Robin Wilson and Craig O'Boyle moving to Bite are two that spring to mind).

Don't see how TUPE could be invoked. Very few of the staff will have been working only on Motorola.

Forget TUPE, more likely that all the team are currently taking strange personal calls in meeting room and rushing off in their sunday best at 5.31 everyday...

Tupe doesn't cover contractors until the law changes later this year. Good timing I would say.
